The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie: first edition together with original uncorrected proof copy.
Description
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie: first edition together with original uncorrected proof copy. This is scarce and valuable. The technical description comes first: You are bidding on a very fine first edition, first impression copy of Muriel Spark’s best loved novel. Published by MACMILLAN & Co, London, 1961. The book is in very fine condition as is the distinctive green pictorial dust wrapper which has not been price clipped. An original uncorrected proof is included which is also in fine condition. Proofs are very rare. Interested bidders might study the photographs which are of the exact items being auctioned. Rare and collectable especially in this condition and with the original proof. This short novel was hugely successful as was the stage adaptation in 1966. The film version in 1969 saw Maggie Smith win an OSCAR for her portrayal of Jean Brodie. “Give me a girl at an impressionable age and she’s mine for life” is probably the most quoted line from the book. If nothing else this line betrays Miss Brodie as a seriously dedicated manipulator of other people. “Sandy” sees through the complexities of her teacher and eventually causes her downfall. All set in Edinburgh in the nineteen thirties. Aside from all its other merits this classic of modern fiction includes a longish passage set on a golf course. Both the psychologically insightful Sandy and her playing partner Miss Brodie appear to be decent golfers! A very attractive auction lot.
