Anthony Green Lockdown Love Letters: By the late Anthony Green RA (1939-2023)

This piece by Anthony summarises the book very well: A Green Thread. Students at the Slade, we met in 1957. Sixty-three years later, happily married for fifty-nine of them, we were separated by the Covid virus epidemic. Mary in a nursing home, fading away, ravaged by Parkinsons disease; me at home, mortal but so tired and alone. The telephone was frustrating, her voice faltering and my deafness increasing. Perhaps yesterday’s habit might do? Don’t shout, write a letter in red ink and watercolour on the reverse. Between 16th March and 19th May 2020, Mary received dozens of love letters.

The contents of nine of them designed to be joined with green garden-string, to reveal an old Anthony, besotted by his Mary. More red ink remembered our adventures abroad – Tympanums, The Pech-Merle Horse, a raffia ring and cabbage patch loo, Mary’s first solo exhibition in New York and me holding her handbag while she made the speech to launch her Objects of Obsession exhibition in Tokyo. Mary never tied the nine parts together. After her death on July 4th 2020, I discovered that she had kept all the correspondence neatly to one side.
