"Red Card", Original Linocut by Willie Rodger
Description
Original Linocut by Willie Rodger RSA RGI DUniv (1930 -2018). Here you are bidding on a unique ‘Artist’s Proof’ created by Willie Rodger in 1993. The ‘proof’ satisfied the artist and the image materialised into a most popular hand printed edition of 22 (all of which have since been sold). We are indebted to the Willie Rodger Art Trust for making this very special item available for us to auction. The image measures 41 x 33 cm & the art paper 51 x 49 cm. It has been hand signed by the artist. The scene depicted here shows the artist at his insightful and humorous best. Black ink with the single use of red ink makes for a striking image. The permutations are endless and we believe that was in the mind of Willie Rodger when he created this in his own distinctive style. Is it a ‘straight red’ for a fierce tackle; why does the offending player’s team mate look so terribly distraught; is the player on the ground really injured…? Interested bidders will have their own views. We really like this - especially the physio carrying full medical kit and wearing a tammie! Willie Rodger was born and brought up very near Glasgow and in his small output of football themed art he was always careful to ensure that his football players wore unidentifiable strips. It may be of some interest to note that Walter Smith admired Willie’s football linocuts and had one or more in his personal collection. Direct from the artist’s estate. Thanks to the trustees of the estate - from all at JEL and our charity partners PCAS
