Interested bidders might study the photographs carefully as these are of the actual items comprising this valuable auction lot. Here you are bidding on a fine first edition of ‘The Constant Gardener’, Hodder & Stoughton, 2001. Signed by John le Carré as photographed. Both the book and pictorial dust wrapper are in near mint and unread condition. A contemporary Sunday Times newspaper review is loosely laid in - dated 10 December 2000. The book is covered in a removable archival clear sleeve for its protection and a grey ‘made to size’ slip case is also included. Of particular interest will be the additional loose page from a later edition (first page of chapter one) which the author has annotated in black ink thus: “I had an infuriated response from the British High Commissioner [retired] about this book. How does one reply? Terribly sorry? Hard. John le Carré“ The novel was one of the author’s personal favourites. Its subject matter is the alleged testing of new drugs on children in Kenya by a fictional pharmaceutical corporation. Subsequently adapted for film starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. No reserve but competitive bidding is anticipated. PROVENANCE: From a personal collection. The annotated page was sent to the present owner direct from David Cornwell in 2017.
